Overview
Chengde was the Qing emperors’ summer capital. The Mountain Resort is China’s largest surviving imperial garden — twice the size of the Summer Palace. The surrounding Eight Outer Temples blend Han, Tibetan and Mongol architecture, the most spectacular being Putuo Zongcheng (the “Little Potala”).
Good for: history lovers, imperial-garden fans, weekend trips from Beijing, families.

Practical tips
- At the Mountain Resort, the mountain shuttle (¥50) saves a lot of walking; queue early in peak season.
- Pick one or two Outer Temples: Putuo Zongcheng is the must; Puning’s Guanyin is stunning.
- Chengde is 5–8°C cooler than Beijing in summer — good for escaping the heat, but the mountains have strong UV.
- A Beijing day trip is possible, but an overnight is better: D1 afternoon/evening the lake zone, D2 morning the Outer Temples.
- The Resort ticket (peak season) is valid for two days — you needn’t rush it.
- A boat on the lake (¥50 extra) saves energy and links the lake to the plain zone.
- Putuo Zongcheng’s gilded-tile roofline blazes in the afternoon sun — best light then.
- November–March is the fire-prevention season; the mountain shuttle may stop — check before a winter visit.
- Chengde winters are cold and dry, down to −15°C — bring a heavy down jacket.
- From Chengde South station, bus 69 or K1 reaches town; a taxi is about ¥30.
- Peak season (July–August) needs advance booking; weekend rates can rise 30–50%.
- Qingchui Peak takes ~1.5 h on foot; a one-way cable car is ¥50.
