Overview

“Above there is heaven, below there are Suzhou and Hangzhou.” Suzhou’s classical gardens are a World Heritage Site (nine gardens); the canals and bridges of Zhouzhuang and Tongli are the archetypal Jiangnan water towns; Pingjiang Road and Shantang Street distill the old city.

Good for: garden lovers, water-town lovers, photographers, hanfu fans.

Practical tips

  • Humble Administrator’s Garden and the Suzhou Museum are next to each other — do them together.
  • One or two gardens is enough: Humble Administrator’s + Lingering Garden or Lion Grove.
  • Suzhou Museum needs advance booking (WeChat; hard at weekends).
  • Choose either Zhouzhuang or Tongli — Tongli is better value.
  • Suzhou rewards slow travel, especially the lanes around Pingjiang Road.
