Overview

The Dazu Rock Carvings are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the masterpiece of China’s late grotto art — “the final monument of Chinese cave sculpture”. First cut in the early Tang, they continued through the late Tang, Five Dynasties and Southern Song, concentrated at Baodingshan and Beishan. Unlike the earlier caves at Dunhuang or Longmen, Dazu is celebrated for being “secular and everyday”, blending Confucianism, Buddhism and Daoism. The Thousand-Hand Guanyin, the Cave of Perfect Enlightenment and the reclining Buddha are the must-sees.

Getting there

  • Bus: Chongqing (Caiyuanba / Longtousi) → Dazu bus station, about 1.5 h, ≈¥50. Then bus or taxi to Baodingshan (≈15 min).
  • Self-drive: central Chongqing → G5013 → Dazu East exit, about 1.5 h.
  • High-speed rail: Chongqing West → Dazu South about 40 min (≈¥40), then ≈40 min by taxi to Baodingshan.
  • Day tour: from Chongqing with transport and tickets, ≈¥200–300 pp — easy but fixed timing.

See & do

  • Baodingshan (¥115; the Southern Song highlight: Thousand-Hand Guanyin, Cave of Perfect Enlightenment, reclining Buddha, the “Parents’ Grace” and “Hell” tableaux): the core of Dazu, carved under the monk Zhao Zhifeng. The Thousand-Hand Guanyin has 1,007 hands. Allow about 2 h.
  • Beishan (¥70; late Tang–Southern Song: the Wheel of the Law cave, Peacock Wisdom King, Sun-and-Moon and Water-Moon Guanyin): famed for its bodhisattvas — “the last glory of Chinese cave art”. Finer and quieter. Allow about 1.5 h.
  • Combined ticket (¥140 for Baodingshan + Beishan): saves ¥45; set aside a full day for both.
  • Dazu Rock Carvings Museum (included with Baodingshan; 3D displays and hands-on exhibits): good background on the carving craft.
  • Nanshan (free; Daoist figures; smaller): with Baoding and Beishan it completes the “three mountains”; visit if time allows.

Eat

  • Youting crucian carp (Youting town; fresh-killed, spicy and tender; ¥50–80 pp): Dazu’s most famous dish, a Chongqing “jianghu” classic.
  • Dingjiapo potato (mashed potato with chilli powder, ¥5–10).
  • Dazu winter vegetable tips (a local pickled specialty; stir-fry or seasoning): a good souvenir.
  • Sanqu rice shrimp (rice jelly “shrimp” in brown-sugar syrup; a summer cooler).

Where to stay

  • Dazu town (¥150–300): plenty of hotels, about 15 min by taxi from Baodingshan — good for independent travel.
  • Near Baodingshan (¥200–400): handy for being first in at opening, but few options.
  • A day trip from Chongqing needs no overnight stay.

Practical tips

  • Dazu is a World Heritage Site — do not touch the carvings or use flash.
  • At Baodingshan, hire a guide (≈¥100 for 1 h) or an audio guide (¥20); without commentary the stories don’t come through.
  • The restored Thousand-Hand Guanyin is brilliantly gilded, but the protective glass reflects — shoot at an angle.
  • Best times: at the 8:00 opening or after 3:00 pm — better light, fewer tour groups.
  • Baodingshan has covered corridors throughout, so it’s visitable in rain.
  • Beishan is steep; take care if mobility is limited.
  • Suggested order: morning Baodingshan → Youting crucian carp in town at noon → afternoon Beishan.
  • A same-day return from Chongqing is entirely feasible: leave at 8 am, back by 5 pm.
  • Pair Dazu with Wulong’s karst over 2–3 days — they’re in different directions, so allow separate days.
