Overview
Chaka Salt Lake is called “China’s mirror of the sky” — a Chinese answer to Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni. The lake sits at 3,100 m and covers about 105 km². On a clear, windless day the surface turns to glass, reflecting the sky and clouds; it is Qinghai’s most famous photo spot.
Getting there
- Charter / shared car: from Xining, west along the G6 expressway ~300 km, about 4 h. Shared cars ≈ ¥150–200 per person.
- Bus: direct coaches from Xining’s main bus station, about 5 h.
- Self-drive: Xining → Huangyuan → Daotang River → Heimahe → Chaka, with a stop at Qinghai Lake.
- Train: a tourist train runs Xining → Chaka (K9803, ~4 h) in peak season.
See & do
- Sky Mirror Square (included in the ticket; salt sculptures, salt paths, viewing platform): the entrance area, with wide views over the lake.
- Salt Lake train (¥50 one way; old narrow-gauge line ~5 km to the deepest point): a retro ride across the lake — take it in and walk back.
- Lake-centre photo zone (free to enter the water; shoe covers ¥10; the “mirror” core): the best reflections, ideally in soft morning or evening light.
- Salt-sculpture group (free; large salt artworks, new theme each year): along the train line.
- Night-sky mirror (occasional evening sessions; star reflections; needs a clear, moonless night): book ahead.
Eat
- Restaurants cluster at the crossroads in Chaka town, mainly halal noodles and beef/lamb.
- Qinghai clay hotpot (several in town; beef/lamb + noodles + vegetables; ≈ ¥60–80 pp).
- Yak yoghurt (¥8–15; quite sour — add sugar).
- Bring your own snacks: choice inside the scenic area is limited and pricey.
Where to stay
- Chaka town (5 min from the gate): ¥200–500, plenty of hotels, handy for an early start.
- Heimahe (1 h away; Qinghai Lake sunrise): ¥200–400, good for a two-day lake + salt-lake trip.
- July–August is tight — book at least two weeks ahead.
Practical tips
- Best conditions: clear + windless, before 9 am or after 5 pm — only a still surface gives the mirror effect.
- What to wear: red, orange or yellow reflects best; bring flip-flops or sandals.
- Shoe covers are required in the water (rent ¥10/pair) — barefoot is painful and bad for your skin.
- Zhejiang residents get free entry with an ID card (the train still costs extra).
- At 3,100 m some visitors feel mild altitude symptoms — avoid strenuous activity.
- Plateau UV is fierce: sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat are essential; the lake glare is hard on eyes.
- Wind ripples the water and kills the reflection — check the forecast; overcast days aren’t worth it.
- If the train queue is long, walk in (about 30 min to the centre) — the walk is photogenic too.
- There are two areas: the old one (Sky Mirror) and the new one (Sky No.1); the old one is the classic.
- Pair with Qinghai Lake over two days: D1 Xining → around Qinghai Lake → stay Heimahe; D2 sunrise → Chaka → back to Xining.
