Overview
“An earthly paradise”, “God’s own reserve”. In autumn (late September–early October) it is the ceiling of China’s fall scenery. Kanas Lake lies deep in the Altai Mountains; the water changes colour with the seasons and is ringed by primeval taiga — the ultimate destination for photographers and nature travellers.
History
“Kanas” means “beautiful and mysterious” in Mongolian. This was summer pasture for Tuvan Mongols and Kazakh herders. It became a national nature reserve in 1995, a national geopark in 2000, and a 5A scenic area in 2007. Legends of the “Kanas Lake monster” (a giant taimen) have drawn explorers since the 1980s.

Practical tips
Best season: 25 September–7 October (golden birches + evergreen pines + blue lake = China’s autumn ceiling). July–August is the green season and busiest. December–February is snow-country, quieter, but some roads close.
Avoid the traps:
- Staying a night in Hemu for the morning mist is the soul of the trip — a day return misses it.
- The mountain road (Burqin → Kanas, 300 bends) causes motion sickness — bring tablets.
- Peak-season accommodation must be booked 1–2 months ahead; last-minute means no room or sky-high prices.
- The Fish-Viewing Terrace is better in the afternoon — go after 14:00.
- The Baihaba border permit is free at the Kanas visitor centre (bring ID); ~30 min queue in peak.
- Kanas flights are very weather-dependent — allow a one-day buffer.
- Food inside the area is pricey (a plate of greens ~¥40); bring some of your own.
- The Three Bays walk goes downhill from Immortal to Dragon Bay — about 3 km, 1.5 h.
