Zibo shot to national fame in 2023 as the epicenter of China’s barbecue (shaokao) craze, when young travelers flocked from across the country to experience its unique DIY grill culture. While the peak frenzy has subsided, the city’s tourism infrastructure has matured significantly, making it an even better destination. Located in central Shandong, Zibo is also the ancient capital of the Qi State (1046-221 BC) during the Zhou Dynasty, giving it deep historical roots. Beyond barbecue, the city is famous for its ceramics and glassware heritage, the Zhoucun Ancient Commercial City, and the Liaozhai culture rooted in Pu Songling’s Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio. Zibo is ideal for food lovers on a day trip from Jinan or Qingdao.

贴士 (Travel Tips)
- BBQ etiquette: Grilling is done at your table. The standard order is a set of skewers (30-50 yuan for a mixed platter), plus the pancake-scallion-sauce trio. Wrap meat in pancake with scallion and dip — that’s the authentic way.
- Badaju Market timing: Go in the late afternoon (16:00-18:00) for the freshest snacks and shortest queues. Morning crowds are heavy on weekends.
- Zhoucun Ancient City: Entry to the main street is free. Some small museums inside (票号, 大染坊) charge 10-20 yuan each. The whole area takes 2-3 hours.
- Ceramics Museum: Free admission requires a real-name ID (passport for foreigners). Monday closed. Audio guides available in Chinese only.
- Best season: Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-October) are ideal. Summer is hot (35+ C) and winter is cold and dry.
- Day-trip from Jinan: Zibo is only 30 min by high-speed train from Jinan. Most visitors arrive in the morning, hit BBQ at lunch, explore in the afternoon, and return. No need to stay overnight unless you want to explore Boshan or Tanxi Mountain.
- Language: English is limited. Have your destinations written in Chinese. Most BBQ restaurants have picture menus.
- Transport between sights: Sights are spread across Zhangdian, Zhoucun, Zichuan, and Boshan districts (each 30-60 min apart). Taking Didi or renting a car is recommended over buses.
- Haidai Tower: Visit at sunset for the best light over Qisheng Lake. The Zhongshuge bookstore inside is stunning but expect crowds on weekends.
- Tanxi Mountain tip: Book glass bridge tickets online in advance (about 100 yuan combo). Wear sports shoes. The glass bridge is not suitable for those with a fear of heights.
- BoShan cuisine: The Boshan district is the culinary heart of Zibo. Boshan tofu box (豆腐箱) and crispy pork (炸肉) are must-tries beyond BBQ.
- Special events: Zibo holds an annual Ceramics & Glass Fair in September. The Qishan Cherry Blossom Festival runs April-May.
