Chongzuo, on the China-Vietnam border in southwestern Guangxi, is home to two of the region’s most stunning natural wonders — Detian Waterfall (Detian Pubu), the largest transnational waterfall in Asia, and Mingshi Pastoral Scenery (Mingshi Tianyuan), a dreamlike karst landscape that served as a filming location for the TV series Hua Qiangu. The area is also rich in border history, with Youyi Pass (Friendship Pass) and the UNESCO-listed Zuojiang Huashan Rock Paintings. Chongzuo is best visited as a 2-day road trip from Nanning.

贴士 (Tips)
- Best waterfall timing: June to October provides the greatest water volume. In dry season (Nov-Apr), the waterfall is much smaller.
- Detian + Mingshi combo: The two are only ~30 km apart. Visit Detian in the morning (waterfall is sunlit), then Mingshi in the afternoon for the boat ride.
- Crossing to Vietnam at Detian: It is possible to cross the border at the waterfall (TRAVEL port) — check visa requirements in advance. A passport is essential.
- Self-drive recommended: A rental car from Nanning (2.5 hr to Detian) gives you maximum flexibility. Buses from Nanning to Daxin also run regularly (~80 CNY, 2.5 hr).
- Road conditions: The road from Daxin to Detian can be narrow and winding. Drive carefully, especially in wet weather.
- Vietnamese currency: ATMs at Pingxiang may offer Vietnamese dong. Carry some small RMB for border market purchases.
- Mingshi cycling: Bicycles are available for rent at Mingshi Villa (~20 CNY/hr). Cycling through the karst fields is the highlight of the visit.
- Photography: Detian waterfall is best photographed from a raft on the river. Mingshi is best in the golden hour (late afternoon).
- Accommodation: Mingshi Villa is the most convenient option for scenery lovers. Book ahead on weekends and holidays.
- Combine with Nanning: A classic route is Nanning (1 day) → Chongzuo / Detian (2 days) → return to Nanning. The total trip is 3 days.
