Yueyang is a historic city on the northeastern shores of Dongting Lake in Hunan Province, best known for Yueyang Tower (岳阳楼), one of the “Three Great Towers of Jiangnan” alongside Yellow Crane Tower in Wuhan and Tengwang Pavilion in Nanchang. Built in 215 AD and immortalized by Fan Zhongyan’s famous essay “Memorial to Yueyang Tower” (岳阳楼记) with its iconic line “Be the first to worry about the world’s troubles, and the last to enjoy its pleasures” (先天下之忧而忧, 后天下之乐而乐), the tower has been a pilgrimage site for Chinese literati for nearly a millennium. Yueyang also offers access to Junshan Island on Dongting Lake, known for its bamboo groves, temple ruins, and Junshan Yinzhen (Silver Needle) tea. 1. Yueyang Tower night ticket: After 18:00, the ticket price drops to 35 yuan (half price). The tower is beautifully lit at night and far less crowded. The view of the illuminated tower against the dark lake is dramatic.
2. Memorize the essay: Yueyang Tower offers free admission to any visitor who can recite Fan Zhongyan’s “Memorial to Yueyang Tower” (岳阳楼记) from memory in full. This is a real policy — practice before you go.
3. Weather check: Dongting Lake is famous for its ever-changing mists and clouds. The best views of the lake from the tower are on clear autumn days. Summer is humid and hot; winter brings cold damp air and frequent fog.
4. Junshan Island logistics: The ferry to Junshan Island runs from approximately 08:00 to 17:00, with the last return ferry around 17:30 (seasonal variation). Allow at least 2-3 hours on the island. The 78 yuan admission is set by Hunan provincial pricing authority, valid through 2031.
5. Chunqiu Pavilion (春秋阁): A lesser-known gem within the Yueyang Tower complex, this pavilion commemorates the Three Kingdoms general Guan Yu. Very quiet compared to the main tower.
6. Combining with Changsha: Yueyang is only 30 min from Changsha by high-speed rail. Many visitors do a day trip: depart Changsha South at 08:00, visit Yueyang Tower in the morning, lunch at Bianhe Street, ferry to Junshan Island in the afternoon, return by 19:00 train.
7. Best season: Autumn (September-October) is the best time, with clear skies and comfortable temperatures. Spring (March-May) is also pleasant. Avoid Chinese National Day holiday (Oct 1-7) when crowds are massive.
